We're more than just a webring! All of our founding members met while working at Google - and we really liked how well-organised and resourceful the company's internal intranet/VPN was. If you've ever worked there, you probably thought things like:
... were absolutely amazing. We kind of want to establish our own intranet/VPN like that, with smooth and unnoticeable integration into our devices.
Ok, so you want your own intranet, internal tools, monorepo, coding standards, et cetera. Aren't you just describing making an unpaid software engineering company?

At the moment we are really tiny, and we only really have a single, flat trust level across the org akin to "admin across everything". We can have this because we (current members) have known each other well for a while, and have established we're not gonna do any stupid shit.
